Money and output interaction in Nigeria: an econometric investigation using multivariate cointegration technique

    Get PDF
This paper derives and estimates a barro-type reduced form equation for domestic real output from a simple structural model of an open developing economy in which markets clear continuously and expectations are rational. The form in which open economy variables appeared was explicitly derived from an underlying structural model. The model was adapted to Nigerian Economy by according an important role to imported intermediate goods. The empirical result provided support for the open economy model of output determination in Nigeria.cointegration

A VECTOR ERROR CORRECTION AND NONNESTED MODELLING OF MONEY DEMAND FUNCTION IN NIGERIA

This paper examines the stability of the demand for money in nigeria. With relatively simple model specifying a vector valued autoregressive process(VAR), the hypothesis of the existence of cointegration vectors is formulated as the hypothesis of reduced rank of the longrun impact matrix. This enabled us to derive estimates and test statistics for the hypothesis of a given number of cointegration vectors. The money demand function was found to be stable and evidence gathered from the non- nested tests suggest that income is the more appropriate scale variable in the estimation of money demand function in nigeria.vector error correction model cointegration money demand consumption nonnested models

THE NIGERIAN WARS, REGIONAL CRISES AND ETHNIC DISTURBANCES:POLICY RESPONSES AND DEMOCRATIC IMPLICATIONS

Nigeria was incorporated in 1914 when Frederick Lugard (First Governor General) amalgamated the two British protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria and the Crown Colony of Lagos into a single entity. The primary reason for amalgamation was economic rather then political. It is therefore, a matter for great regret that this country (Nigeria) has sulfured as a result of the all-pervasive disunity that has characterized all government action since our accession to independence in 1960. This disunity has distorted, complicated and to a large extent stultified every development effort undertaken by government. This paper therefore argents that the much-celebrated Nigeria reform progress might be rhetoric or much ado about nothing. And that the âÃÂÃÂBB-, BB and BâÃÂàrating of the Nigerian economy might have been a baseless exercise. Consequently, the paper recommends the adoption of e-governance (development) as a therapy for a heterogeneous and divisible nation such as Nigerian (Ceteris Paribus).war; nigeria; biafra; ethnicity; trabalism; regionalcrises; disturbances; policy; democracy; governance-voting; elections; economy; corruption; coup; constitution; nigerdelta

The Economics of Politics vs the Politics of Economics: Nigerian case

Indeed, the recent emphasis on eco-political governance in Nigeria is unique in that it was initiated by external donors (international organizations) and not by domestic leaders under pressure from their own constituencies. Thus, while Nigeria have embraced the market economy and liberalized their policies; issues related to political participation, democracy and institution building have proven harder to tackle. This paper therefore argued that government must devote resources and political will to overcoming the harsh poverty experienced by the majority of Nigerians. In this regard, the emerging participatory e-development and traditional development strategies should not be seen as mutually exclusive but rather complementary (so as to avert the status of a failed state).politics;economics;corruption;economy;Nigeria; e-development;ICT;participation;governance;policies; development;resources;new economy;financialcrisis;poverty; economicmanagement;electoralprocess;technology

Energy Power, Digital Infrastructure and Elearning Platforms: Afrrican Experience.

Information and communication technologies are one of the most pervasive technologies in the world, second only to 'human intelligence' or the human brain. Thus, understanding the factors that determine the diffusion of new technologies across african countries is important to understanding the process of economic development. And whereas, energy is linked with the capacity to perform, the rate at which energy is consumed for the acceleration of the pace of socio-economic activities is regarded as power. Consequently, it will be obvious that the magnitude of the standard of living in any society; the growth and development of such an economy; and its ability to affect the course of events(such as ICT revolution)will be a function of the extent to which its energy(power) resources are developed and utilised. This paper therefore argued for the need to provide assistance in reducing vulnerability and building the capacity of african countries to more widely reap the benefits of the clean development mechanism in areas such as the development of cleaner and renewable energies. Inevitably, this is the critical condition for the sustainability of the emergent e-learning platforms and digital networks in africa.ICT, learning, elearning, development, energy, power, information, communication, solar, electricity, wind, governance, africa, electronics, telecommunications, internet, digital, satellite, renewable energy, gas turbine, power plants, bandwidth, coal, hydro, biomass, steam, transmission, distribution, utilisation

Inflation,Unemployment and Nigerian Families: An empirical investigation

At present, the world economy is at a cross road. The Nigerian economy is therefore undergoing it most severe economic crisis since the Biafra war of the sixties. Currently, she is experiencing a staggering rate of inflation (well up to the double digit) as well as experiencing a severe recession (as the unemployment rate has risen astronomically). Consequently, a basic thesis of this proposal is that stagflation has caused and will continue to cause considerable hardship for many Nigerian families and poses a serious threat to the mental health of a substantial proportion of the population. It is therefore the aim of this research to document in a systematic way how families that have experienced varying degrees of “inflation crunch” have adjusted to or tried to adapt to this pressure. In other words, this phased research project proposes to provide information that will be useful to policy makers (government) who must weigh the costs and benefits of the current inflationary pressures as well as severe recession. Essentially, the result will be an emergence and evolution of corrective policy measures and strategies (as adequate and functional).inflation; unemployment; stagflation; inflationcrunch; nigeria; economy; world; depression; recession; targeting; phillipscurve; monetarypolicy; rationalexpectations; keynesiantheory; newclassicals; wages; prices; NAIRU

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND THE PRODUCTIVITY PARADOX:EMERGING EVIDENCE FROM THE AFRICAN ECONOMIES

Technological progress is considered as a source of growth and productivity gains for national economies. Thus, understanding the factors that determine the diffusion of new technologies across countries is important to understanding the process of economic development. This project therefore investigates whether technological revolution has revolutionary economic consequences and in particular, is economic productivity growing at a much faster rate today, and if so , will it continue to do so in the future? Using the dynamic panel data methodology , emerging evidence from African economies will be revealed.TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS, GROWTH, PRODUCTIVITY DIFFUSION, ICTS, AFRICAN ECONOMIES, DYNAMIC PANEL DATA

PERHAPS, POVERTY AND PLENTY IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CHALLENGE. THIS STUDY THEREFORE PROPOSE AN APPLIED(COMPUTABLE)GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM APPROACH, THAT IS A RENEW ATTENTION TO THE PROBLEM OF POVERTY , EMPLOYMENT AND INEQUALITY THAT EARLIER STRATEGIES FOCUSING ON RAPID GROWTH WERE UNABLE TO RESOLVE. USING NIGERIA AS A CASE STUDY, WE PERFORM THE SPECIFICATION, ESTIMATION AND CALIBRATION OF A POVERTY-BASED MODEL WITHIN DATA FRAMEWORK OF SOCIAL ACCOUNTING MATRIX(SAM). THE RESEARCH OUTPUT IS EXPECTED TO BE THE POLICY RESPONSE TO THE ENVISAGED COMPLEX HUMANITARIAN EMERGENCIES(CHEs) FACING POOR COUNTREIS SUCH AS NIGERIA.POVERTY, APPLIED GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM MODEL, SOCIAL ACCOUNTING MATRICE, NIGERIAN ECONOMY, EMPLOYMENT, INEQUALITY
